How Monthly Salary Tax Works in Pakistan, With Examples
Published 8 November 2026 by Kloora Tools
Quick answer: For tax year 2027 (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027), a salaried person pays nothing on the first Rs 600,000 a year, then a rising percentage on each band above it, up to 35 percent on income above Rs 7 million. Your employer withholds the tax from each month's pay.
This guide explains how the slabs work and walks through examples. It is an estimate for planning. Your real tax depends on your whole situation, so confirm it with your employer or the FBR.
The slabs for tax year 2027
These are the salaried individual slabs reported for the Finance Act 2026:
- Up to Rs 600,000: no tax
- Rs 600,001 to Rs 1,200,000: 1 percent of the amount above Rs 600,000
- Rs 1,200,001 to Rs 2,200,000: Rs 6,000 plus 11 percent of the amount above Rs 1,200,000
- Rs 2,200,001 to Rs 3,200,000: Rs 116,000 plus 20 percent of the amount above Rs 2,200,000
- Rs 3,200,001 to Rs 4,100,000: Rs 316,000 plus 25 percent of the amount above Rs 3,200,000
- Rs 4,100,001 to Rs 5,600,000: Rs 541,000 plus 29 percent of the amount above Rs 4,100,000
- Rs 5,600,001 to Rs 7,000,000: Rs 976,000 plus 32 percent of the amount above Rs 5,600,000
- Above Rs 7,000,000: Rs 1,424,000 plus 35 percent of the amount above Rs 7,000,000
The surcharge that applied to very high salaries in the previous year was removed from July 2026. Rates change in every budget, so check the current figures on the FBR website.
Marginal tax is not tax on everything
A common mistake is to think that crossing into a higher slab taxes your whole salary at the higher rate. It does not. Each rate applies only to the part of your income inside that band. That is why the fixed amount in each row, such as Rs 116,000, is already the tax on all the earlier bands.
Worked examples
Take the yearly salary as twelve times the monthly salary.
- Rs 100,000 a month (Rs 1,200,000 a year): tax is 1 percent of Rs 600,000, which is Rs 6,000 a year, or Rs 500 a month. Effective rate: 0.5 percent.
- Rs 150,000 a month (Rs 1,800,000 a year): tax is Rs 6,000 plus 11 percent of Rs 600,000, which is Rs 72,000 a year, or Rs 6,000 a month. Effective rate: 4 percent.
- Rs 250,000 a month (Rs 3,000,000 a year): tax is Rs 116,000 plus 20 percent of Rs 800,000, which is Rs 276,000 a year, or Rs 23,000 a month. Effective rate: 9.2 percent.
- Rs 400,000 a month (Rs 4,800,000 a year): tax is Rs 541,000 plus 29 percent of Rs 700,000, which is Rs 744,000 a year, or Rs 62,000 a month. Effective rate: 15.5 percent.
Under the previous year's slabs, the Rs 400,000 salary would have paid about Rs 861,000 a year, so the new slabs reduce the tax for higher earners.
What this estimate leaves out
- Allowances and benefits that are taxed or exempt in different ways
- Tax credits and deductions you may be allowed, such as for certain donations or investments
- Other income in the same year
- Mid-year salary changes, which can change the monthly withholding
- Your filer status and any other taxes
Because of these, the amount on your payslip can differ from the estimate. Use the estimate to plan, not as a final figure.
Using the calculator
Open the Pakistan salary tax calculator, type your monthly salary, and choose the tax year. It shows the yearly tax, the monthly tax, your take home pay and your effective rate. Switch to the earlier tax year to compare. If you also need hourly rates, try the salary to hourly converter.
A note on accuracy
Tax rules change, and an online estimate is not tax advice. For a decision that matters, such as negotiating a salary or filing a return, check the figures with your employer's payroll team, the FBR or a qualified tax adviser.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I pay on Rs 150,000 a month in Pakistan?

Does the higher rate apply to my whole salary?
No. Each rate applies only to the part of your income that falls inside its band.
Is the salary surcharge still charged?
The surcharge on high salaried incomes was removed from July 2026, so the tax year 2027 slabs have none. Check the FBR for the latest rules.
