How to Calculate Car Loan EMI and the Total Cost
Published 1 November 2026 by Kloora Tools
Quick answer: car loan EMI = loan x r / (1 - (1 + r) ^ -n), where r is the monthly rate and n is the number of months. For a 3,000,000 car with 20 percent down, a 2,400,000 loan at 12 percent over 5 years costs 53,387 a month and about 803,200 in total interest. The free EMI Calculator does the maths in one click. The 12 percent rate is only an example, so use your bank's current quote.
How do you calculate car loan EMI?
- Subtract the down payment from the car price to get the loan amount.
- Divide the annual rate by 12 and by 100 to get the monthly rate r.
- Multiply the term in years by 12 to get n.
- Apply the formula.
Example: price 3,000,000, down payment 20 percent (600,000), loan 2,400,000, rate 12 percent, 5 years.
r = 0.01, n = 60. EMI = 2,400,000 x 0.01 / (1 - 1.01 ^ -60) = 53,387.
Total paid = 53,387 x 60 = 3,203,200. Total interest = 803,200. Add the down payment and the car costs 3,803,200 in all.
Is a 3 year or 5 year car loan better?
| Term | Monthly EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 3 years (36 months) | 79,714 | 469,716 |
| 5 years (60 months) | 53,387 | 803,200 |
The 5 year loan has a payment that is 26,327 lower each month, but costs about 333,000 more in interest. If you can afford the 3 year EMI, you save a lot. If the 3 year payment squeezes your budget, choose the longer term and prepay when you can.
How much down payment should you make?
A larger down payment reduces the loan and interest. Many lenders ask for 15 to 30 percent. Every extra 100,000 you pay upfront lowers the EMI by about 2,224 a month on a 5 year loan at 12 percent. Do not use your emergency fund for the down payment.
What are the hidden costs of owning a car?
The EMI is only part of the monthly cost. Add:
- Insurance: often a yearly percentage of the car value. Comprehensive insurance is usually required by the lender.
- Registration and token tax: one time and yearly.
- Fuel: use the Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate it.
- Maintenance and tyres: service every few thousand kilometres.
- Processing fees and takaful or insurance charges from the bank.
A simple rule used by many planners is to keep total car spending under 15 to 20 percent of your monthly income.
Conventional or Islamic financing?
Islamic banks offer car ijarah or diminishing musharakah. Their monthly payment is calculated from a rental rate, not an interest rate, but the maths looks similar. Compare the total amount paid, the early settlement terms and the takaful requirement before you sign. Ask for the full schedule in writing.
How do you compare two offers?
Use the same price, down payment and term. Compare monthly payment, total payable and fees. Look at the effective rate, not only the advertised rate. A lower rate with high fees can cost more than a higher rate with none.
