How to Calculate Your Age on a Cutoff Date for Jobs and Admissions
Published 1 November 2026 by Kloora Tools
Quick answer: to find your age on a cutoff date, count full years from your date of birth to the cutoff, then count the remaining months and days. Someone born on 15 March 2000 is 26 years, 4 months and 17 days old on 1 August 2026. The free Age Calculator does this for any "age as on" date.
What does "age as on" a date mean?
Many job advertisements and admission notices say that the age limit is counted "as on" a specific date, such as the last date of application or 1 January of the admission year. Your age on today's date does not matter. Only your age on that date counts.
How do you calculate your age on a cutoff date by hand?
- Write the cutoff date and your date of birth.
- Subtract the years. If your birthday has not happened yet in the cutoff year, subtract one year.
- Count the months from your last birthday to the cutoff.
- Count the remaining days.
Example: date of birth 15 March 2000, cutoff 1 August 2026.
- 15 March 2000 to 15 March 2026 = 26 years.
- 15 March 2026 to 15 July 2026 = 4 months.
- 15 July 2026 to 1 August 2026 = 17 days.
Age = 26 years, 4 months, 17 days.
Another example with a birthday after the cutoff
Date of birth 10 September 2001, cutoff 1 August 2026. The birthday in 2026 has not happened by 1 August, so the completed years are 24, not 25. From 10 September 2025 to 10 July 2026 is 10 months, and 10 July to 1 August is 22 days. Age = 24 years, 10 months, 22 days.
How do leap years affect the result?
A leap year adds 29 February. For someone born on 29 February, many rules treat the birthday as 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years. Which one applies depends on the organisation. Check the notice or ask the issuing office when your date of birth is 29 February. A calculator that counts days between dates gives the same days across leap years because it uses the calendar.
Do you have to be under the age limit on the cutoff or at the time of joining?
Read the notice carefully. Some limits are "must not have turned X on the cutoff date", others are "must be at least X on the date of joining". The wording matters. Where it says "upper age limit 28 years", confirm whether that means up to 28 years and 0 days or up to 28 years 11 months 30 days.
What is age relaxation?
Many public notices give extra years for certain categories. Check the official advertisement for the exact number, category and documents. Do not rely on a forum post or a friend, because the rules vary by post and year.
What documents prove your date of birth?
Usually a matriculation certificate or an official birth certificate. Make sure the date on your documents matches your application form exactly. A mismatch of even one digit can cause rejection.
How do you count days between two dates?
If the form asks for the number of days, use the Days Between Dates Calculator or the Age in Days Calculator. See also how to calculate exact age in years, months and days.
