How to Save a Word CV as PDF for a Job Application
Published 8 November 2026 by Kloora Tools
Quick answer: open your CV in Word and use File, then Save As, then PDF. If you do not have Word, use the free Word to PDF Converter and choose Print to PDF so that the text stays selectable. Then send the PDF unless the job ad asks for Word.
Why send a CV as PDF?
A PDF looks the same on every phone and computer. A Word file can shift when opened with different fonts or versions.
How do I check that the PDF is readable?
- Open the PDF and try to select the text with your mouse or finger.
- If you can select it, ATS software can usually read it.
- Test it against the job ad with the ATS CV Checker.
If you cannot select the text, it was saved as a picture. Go back and use Save As PDF in Word, or Print to PDF in our tool.
What should I name my CV file?
Use your name and the role, such as Ayesha-Khan-Accountant-CV.pdf. Avoid names like final-new-2.pdf.
What if the file is too big to upload?
A CV with a photo can get large. Use Compress PDF, then check again that the text is still sharp.
Do you still need to write the CV?
Build one free in the CV Maker, which downloads a PDF or Word file directly.
Frequently asked questions
Is PDF or Word better for ATS?
Most modern systems read both. A text PDF is fine unless the job ad asks for Word.
Will my fonts change in the PDF?
With Save As PDF in Word, they stay the same. In an online converter they can change, so check the preview.
