Quick answer: in Microsoft Word, the word count is in the status bar at the bottom left of the window. Click it for pages, characters and lines. To count text from anywhere, paste it into the free Word Counter.
How to see the word count in Microsoft Word

How to count only one section
Select the text you want. The status bar then shows the count for your selection and the total, such as "120 of 2,000 words".
When is an online word counter better?
- You are writing in Google Docs, an email or a web form.
- You want reading time, sentences and characters together.
- You have only your phone with you.
Paste your text into the Word Counter. It runs in your browser, so the text is not sent anywhere.
Why do word counts differ between tools?
Tools treat dashes, numbers and text in boxes differently. Footnotes and text boxes may or may not be counted in Word, depending on your settings. If a teacher or client sets a limit, use the tool they use for the final check.

That depends on a setting. In the Word Count window, tick or untick the option to include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes.
How many words fit on one page?
About 400 to 500 words on an A4 page at 12 point with single spacing, and about half that with double spacing.
