How to Change the Size of an Image Without Stretching It

Published 5 November 2026 by Kloora Tools

Quick answer: open the free Resize Image tool, choose your picture, enter the width or height you need and download it. Keep the proportions locked so the picture does not stretch.

How to resize an image in 4 steps

  1. Open Resize Image on any device.
  2. Choose your picture.
  3. Type the new width or height in pixels.
  4. Download the result.

Why do pictures stretch when resized?

A picture stretches when its width and height change by different amounts. If you need a different shape, such as a square from a wide photo, crop it first with the Image Cropper and then resize.

What size should you use?

UseA common width
Website image1200 pixels
Email attachment800 to 1200 pixels
Profile photo400 to 800 pixels, square
Social mediaUse the presets in the Social Media Image Resizer

These are good starting points. If a form or platform gives its own size, use that one.

Can you make a small picture bigger?

You can, but it will not gain real detail. For a small increase, try the Image Upscaler. Shrinking is always safer than enlarging, so keep your original file.

Resize or compress?

Resizing changes the pixels. Compressing changes how much space those pixels take. If a form rejects your picture because of its KB size, use Compress Image to KB instead.

Try it now: Resize Image Online. Change the width and height of a JPG, PNG or WebP image in pixels and keep the proportions.

Frequently asked questions

Will resizing lower the quality?

Making an image smaller usually looks fine. Making it much bigger looks soft because the detail was never there.

Can I resize a picture without an app?

Yes. The tool runs in your phone or computer browser, and the picture is not uploaded.
