How it works

Taxable income is gross income minus the standard deduction. Each slice of taxable income is taxed at its own bracket rate (10, 12, 22, 24, 32, 35 and 37 percent), and the slices are added up.

Worked example

A single filer earning 85,000 deducts 16,100 and has 68,900 taxable. The first 12,400 is taxed at 10 percent, the next 38,000 at 12 percent and the last 18,500 at 22 percent, which totals about 9,870 in federal tax, an effective rate near 11.6 percent.

Good to know

These are estimates for planning, not tax advice. Rates and limits change every year, so confirm the latest figures at irs.gov or with a tax professional.

Frequently asked questions

Which tax year does this use?

It uses 2026 standard deductions and brackets for single, married filing jointly and head of household filers.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar. The effective rate is total tax divided by income, and it is always lower.

Does it include state tax?

No. State income tax varies, and nine states have none. Use the paycheck calculator to add a state rate.

Does it include credits?

No. Credits such as the child tax credit lower the tax further. Subtract them from the result.

Is the Federal Income Tax Calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no signup and works on any device.
