How it works
For long term gains, the part of the gain that sits below the 0 percent threshold is untaxed, the next part is taxed at 15 percent and anything above the top threshold at 20 percent. Short term gains are taxed as ordinary income at your bracket.
Worked example
A single filer with 70,000 of other taxable income and a 20,000 long term gain pays 15 percent, which is 3,000. The same gain short term costs about 4,400 at the 22 percent bracket.
Good to know
These are estimates for planning, not tax advice. Rates and limits change every year, so confirm the latest figures at irs.gov or with a tax professional.
