What Is a Good Typing Speed in WPM? Jobs and Students
Published 1 November 2026 by Kloora Tools
Quick answer: for most people an average typing speed is around 40 words per minute (WPM). Above 60 WPM is considered good for office work, and 80 WPM or more is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed: aim for 95 percent or higher. Measure yourself with the free Typing Test.
What is a good typing speed for a student?
For school and college work, 30 to 40 WPM is enough to take notes and write assignments without feeling slowed down. If you plan to write long essays or take exams on a computer, aim for 40 to 50 WPM. Speed improves quickly with regular practice.
What typing speed do employers expect?
Requirements vary by role. These are common ranges you may see in job ads, not rules:
| Role | Typical WPM asked for |
|---|---|
| General office or admin | 35 to 45 |
| Data entry | 40 to 60 |
| Customer support chat | 40 to 60 |
| Typist or transcription | 60 to 80 |
| Court or captioning work | 80 and above, often with special equipment |
Always read the job description. Some tests ask for a minimum speed and a minimum accuracy at the same time, such as 40 WPM at 95 percent accuracy.
How is WPM calculated?
A "word" in typing tests is five characters, including spaces. Gross WPM = (characters typed / 5) / minutes. Net WPM subtracts mistakes.
Example: you type 250 characters in one minute. That is 250 / 5 = 50 gross WPM. If you make 5 errors, the net speed is about 45 WPM. If the test uses accuracy, your score is correct characters divided by total characters.
What is the difference between speed and accuracy?
Speed without accuracy wastes time because you have to correct mistakes. Most coaches suggest reaching 95 percent accuracy first, then raising speed. If you are at 30 WPM with 90 percent accuracy, slow down slightly and aim for clean typing at 28 WPM before pushing to 35.
How can you improve your typing speed in 30 days?
- Learn touch typing. Place your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and type without looking at the keys.
- Practice 15 to 20 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long weekly session.
- Focus on accuracy first. Slow down until errors are rare.
- Use real text. Practise with paragraphs, not only single words.
- Fix your posture. Keep wrists straight, elbows at about 90 degrees and eyes at screen level.
- Track progress weekly. Retest and note your net WPM.
Most beginners who practise daily can gain 10 to 20 WPM in a month, but results differ from person to person.
What about typing in Urdu?
Urdu typing speed is measured in the same way, but keyboards differ. Phonetic layouts let you type Roman Urdu and get Urdu script. A good starting point is the Urdu Typing tool and our guide on typing Urdu on a computer and phone.
Does typing speed matter if you use voice typing?
Voice typing helps for first drafts, but editing, coding, spreadsheets and quiet places still need the keyboard. Being comfortable on both is useful.
