How it works
Target = expenses / withdrawal rate. Each year the balance grows by the return and receives your savings, until it reaches the target.
Worked example
With 50,000 of expenses the target is 1,250,000. Starting at 80,000 and saving 30,000 a year at 5 percent real return takes about 21 years.
Good to know
This ignores taxes, healthcare before Medicare at 65, and market swings.
