How it works
Each month the balance grows by the monthly return and receives one twelfth of your yearly contribution plus the employer match. Salary is raised once a year by your growth rate.
Worked example
Starting with 25,000, saving 8 percent of an 80,000 salary with a 3 percent match, at 7 percent for 30 years, the balance grows to roughly 1.3 million.
Good to know
Free money first: always contribute at least enough to get the full employer match. These are estimates for planning, not tax advice. Rates and limits change every year, so confirm the latest figures at irs.gov or with a tax professional.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 401(k) limit?
The IRS sets a yearly employee limit (about 24,500 for 2026) with higher catch-up amounts for age 50 and over. Check irs.gov for current numbers.
How does the match work?
Many employers match a share of what you contribute, such as 50 percent of the first 6 percent of salary. Enter the total employer amount as a percent of salary.
Is the return guaranteed?
No. Stock returns vary. Many planners use 6 to 7 percent after inflation for a long-run estimate.
Is the 401(k) Calculator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup and works on any device.
